Strings

About a year ago, Addie began to take note of strings (aka wrinkles) on people's faces.  (For some reason, she doesn't think I have any strings on my face, though.  That's my girl!)  She talks about strings a lot and wishes she had them.  I thought this was a cute conversation that we had after we all (me, Addie and Wrigley) showered (at once) one night. :)

Addieisms

Addison after soccer:

A: Mommy, my knee hurts. I think I need a band aid.

M: Honey, you don't need a band aid unless it's bleeding.

A: It is bleeding, Mommy. (lie) I hurt it at soccer. Someone kicked me with the ball.

M: Well, Addie, you know sometimes we might get hurt when we play soccer.

A: Why?

M: It's just the nature of the game. When someone kicks the ball, it could hit us and that would hurt. That's what happens in sports. You know, if you're going to play sports, you have to be a tough cookie....(continue lecture about how sports can be dangerous and if she wants to be an athlete, she's going to have to endure some pain along the way. Not just with possible injuries, but also with losing, etc.) Yes, I am sure my 3 year old comprehended every. single. word. of it. :) Have I mentioned she REALLY wants to play hockey? God. Save. Me.

A: Well, maybe I didn't hurt it at soccer. Maybe I hurt it getting into the car.

M: Okay, I'm sorry sweetie. We'll ice it when we get home.

A: Actually, I think there is a bug in my knee. Yeah, that's the problem, Mommy. Can you get it out? Can you get the bug out of my knee?

M: Addison, there couldn't be a bug in your knee. There is no way a bug could get in your knee.

A: Well, I think I bumped into Chase. That's the problem! I just remembered! So, we need to get a band aid when we get home. Okay, Mommy?

Addieisms

Driving past a cemetery: "Mommy, how'd those decorations get there? All those rocks?"

Putting her down for a nap: "Mommy, if I dream about the bad man, will you come help me?" (this is the first I've heard of this....oh no!)

Driving to school with Chase next to her, wearing his PJ's:
A: Mommy, Brother Tom used to wear those PJ's. But he didn't wear Chase's. He had his own.
M: Oh really? Does he still wear them?
A: No, he's too big now.
M: Oh? How old is Brother Tom?
A: Ummmm, I think he's about 20.
M: Where does Brother Tom sleep?
A: In my bed. He's soooooo sweet and I hold him.
M: Awww, that's nice.
(good ole' Brother Tom!)

Mommy. Kristi. Mommy. Kristi.

Addison: Mommy. Kristi. Mommy. Kristi. Mommy, sometimes I'm going to call you Mommy and sometimes I'm going to call you Kristi. Okay, Kristi?

My funny little girl and the things she says!

After school on Tuesday....

Addie: Mommy, Mrs. Ramsey asked me to put a bubble in my mouth. (This is something the teachers use to get the kids to be quiet. They puff out a cheek with air, as if there is a bubble in their mouth.)

Mommy: Why? Were you talking when you were supposed to be listening?

Addie: Yes. But Mommy, Shelby was talking.

Mommy: Addie, just because your friends aren't following directions doesn't mean you are allowed to do the same. You need to always do as your teachers say.

Addie: But Shelby kept asking me what Lily's (the new girl in class) name was. I kept saying, "Lily", and she kept asking me.

Mommy: I understand, sweetie. Next time, just put your finger over your lips to help Shelby remember that she shouldn't be talking.

Addison: Okay, Mommy. I will.

-----------------------------------------------------
On our way to soccer....

Addie: Mommy, look at that big hill. We can't drive our car up that big hill. Maybe we can ride our bike up that big hill. Let's think a minute. How else can we get up that big hill? (taps her chin with finger) We can walk. We can run. We can (gets louder) SKIP. WE CAN HIKE. (louder) OOOOOOH, I KNOW, MOMMY! WHEN WE GO TO CANADA, (louder) WE CAN GET THE HORSE (breathes and swallows) AND RIDE IT BACK HERE (louder) AND IT WILL TAKE US UP THAT BIG HILL!!!!!!!!!!

Mommy: That's a great idea, Addie, but I think that would be a really long ride for the horse. Maybe we can find a hill to ride up in Canada.

Addie: Yes, Mommy. That would be a greeeeeeaaaaat idea.

(a good solid minute of silence - very unusual)

Addie: Mommy?

Mommy: Yes?

Addie: Mommy. I am very sorry for screaming in the car. Let me say it in a lower voice. (repeats everything she said about the horse and the hill in a whisper)

Mommy: Oh, it's okay sweetie. I know you were just excited about your wonderful idea. You don't need to apologize for that.

(SERIOUSLY...where does she get it?!?!?)

------------------------------
Also on our way to soccer...

Addie: Mommy, if Aaron (her cousin who is in soccer with her) tries to push me away when I try to hug him, will you please hold him for me so I can hug him?

Mommy: Sure, honey. But, I don't think he'll push you.

Addie: Yes he will, Mommy. And if he pushes me, I will say "Aaron, please don't push me. I don't like it." and if he doesn't listen, I will tell an adult. Like you or Aunt Kaffy (Kathy) or Coach Chad or a Fireman....

(LOL!!!)

-------------------------------
She calls wrinkles "strings" and points them out on everyone (embarrassing!) and puckers her lips to try to make them herself. "Look at my strings, Mommy!

A recent conversation with Addison about college

Addison has been talking about college a lot lately (she watched a Blue's Clues where Steve goes off to college). This is just one of the dozens of conversations we've had about it:

A: I'm going to go to college really far away.

M: Oh? But Mommy will miss you.

A: No you won't. Daddy will live with you.

M: Okay. Do you want Chase to go to the same college as you?

A: Yes. I'm going to go to the library first.

M: That's great! Chase, where will you go first - the frat house?

A: I want to go to the crack house.

M: (giggle, giggle)

A: Mommy, after college I'm going to come live with you and I'm going to work and you won't be sad anymore.

Second week of school

Addison had another good week at school. Tuesday was a little iffy as she told me she "didn't do nothin' " while there for 3 hours (though I finally got from her that they finger painted) and as soon as we got home, had a very uncharacteristic meltdown. When, I dropped her off, she ran right in and started putting together a puzzle with her teacher, but by pick up time, I don't think she was feeling the best. She barely ate lunch and went down for her nap an hour earlier than usual.

Today was much better. As her teacher put her in the car (pick-up is curbside), she started with the details of her day:

A: Mommy, I made blue Fluvver.
M: You made a blue flower?!?!
A: No, blue fluvver.
M: Blue fluffer?
A: NO! Blue FLUUUUUVVVVVERRRRRRR!
M: Oh! Blue flubber?
A: Yes, Mommy!

Indeed, she did make blue flubber. We came home, had lunch, and then she wanted to play with it. She made a turtle and then, a cat. She told me that's what they were and they actually looked like it. I swear I didn't touch the stuff. I am not sure how she created these herself, but I personally think it's pretty amazing. Coincidental? Maybe. But, still, amazing.

The making of the turtle.....

The making of the cat....

Yes, I know the cat doesn't have legs and at second glance, it kind of looks like a mouse. But, I still think she's awesome! Later this afternoon, she was on the phone with my mom (Gammy) and the. same. exact. conversation ensued. I then tried to get her to say "Flubber" and she demanded "My teacher said FLUVVER!!!!!" I know she can say it the correct way, and think it is really cute that she was pronouncing it the way she interpreted it and was getting frustrated with us for saying it "the wrong way"!

I asked her what book she read, knowing from the September calendar that I was given, that they were reading Little Miss Spider At Sunny Patch School.
A: It was about a bug.
M: Was it about a Spider?
A: Yes!
M: Neat! Did you sit on your mat for circle time?
A: I couldn't see.
M: Why couldn't you see?
A: "Sit on the carpet and you will be able to see better..." (quoting her teacher, I assume)
M: Where were you sitting?
A: At the table.
M: Why didn't you sit on the carpet?
A: Because I wanted to sit at the table so I could take my friend's toys.

Oh, how I wish I could be a fly on the wall!

And one more...
A: Mommy, I got hit in the face. Matthew hit me in the face.
M: Oh, sweetie. Was it an accident?
A: Yes.
M: Did he say he was sorry.
A: Yes.
M: Did you cry?
A: Yes, I cried because I....he....you aren't there.
M: Well, I am sure the teachers made you feel better.
A: No. I cried because you aren't with me.
M: Yes, baby, but Mommy can't be with you at school. School is a special place for you and your friends.
A: Where are your friends, Mommy?
M: My friends are at their homes.
A: You don't have any friends, Mommy.
M: Yes I do! (picking my self esteem off the floor...he he) Emily is my friend. (my best friend, Emily, is currently in town but not present during this conversation)
A: No you don't. Emily is not outside. I have friends and I will give you one. (proceeds to name pretty much every single kid in our neighborhood)

Addison's conversation with the Border guy when going into Canada for Vacation

I just found this in a note on my phone. It was a cute...and the middle of the night (around 3am)!

Border Guy to Dustin: Whatchya coming to Canada for?
D: Fishing.
Addison from the backseat: We're going to ride on a boat in Candy-a (Canada).
BG to Dustin: Whose boat?
D: (stalls) Friends. Not sure why he lied - it's his parent's boat. He doesn't do well under pressure!
Addison: I have a lot of friends.
BG: Do you?
Addison: Yeah, Grandpa's my friend. And Mommy. And Bubba. And Daddy. And Chase.....

The other night when Addie was supposed to be going to sleep for the night:

A:Hey mom, hey mom, hey mom, hey mom (yelling to me from her bedroom)
M: (I go upstairs) What is it, honey?
A: Can we turn my butterfly light on?
M: No, it's bed time and we need it to be dark to sleep. Now, I don't want to have to come in here again. Close your eyes and go to sleep.
A: Mom, I'm talking to you.
M: Ok, what?
A: I have a question.
M: What's your question sweetie?
A: It's about a rabbit.
M: Ok.
A: Once upon a time there was a bunny.
M: Addison it's night night time.
A: And he was sad because he couldn't find his mom. So I'm going to help him find his mom, ok?
M: Okay sweetie. That's really nice of you.
A: Yeah I'm a nice girl.
M: Yes, you are. I love you. See you in the morning.
A:Night night mommy.

Addieism

A: Mommy, can I watch TV while you feed Chase?
M: Sure, sweetie.
A: That would be really cool, Mommy!
M: Okay, honey.
A: Can I watch Barney?
M: Sure.
A: That would be really great, Mommy! I love Barney. They're my friends.
M: Good, sweetie. I'm glad.
A: Thank you, Mommy. That's really nice of you to let me watch TV!

Addieisms

While reading The Giving Tree - the part where the boy is an old man and just needs a place to rest.

A: Mommy, I want to be old.
M: You will be old someday, sweetie, but you don't want to be old yet. You want to be young so you can play!
(we continue reading)
A: Mommy, I want to be an old stump.

(The ambition this one has! he he)

--------------------------------------------

A: Mommy, I love you.
M: Aww, thanks sweetie. I love you, too.
A: I love you too, Mommy. You're my best friend.

(I just had to document this so I can show her in a few years when she views me as the furthest thing from her best friend. She tells me ALL THE TIME that I'm her best friend. I will definitely enjoy it while it lasts!)

Getting Addison out of bed in the morning

A: Where's daddy?
M: He's at work, honey.
A: Oh, where's grandma?
M: In the shower. How about you say "hi momma, it's nice to see you this morning".
A: Can you hold me? (expecting my answer to be no because I can't pick her up yet.)
M: Yes, of course. Let's get in your chair.
A: OHHH, that would be GREAT!
(We sit down) A: Hi momma. Nice to see you morning.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Put Addison down for a nap and forgot Wrigley was under the bed. Went to her room to get him. I had just eaten a handful of goldfish. She smelled it on my breath and asked, "What do you have in your mouth?" I opened it to show her it was empty and said "Nothing." And she says, "I want some goldfish!"

------------------------------------------------------------------

While Addison was acting her usual animated self at dinner one night:

Me: Addison, I'm going to put you in acting classes, okay?
Addison: (gasp) Ahhh, YOU AAARRRRRRRRRE?

------------------------------------------------------------------

The next two aren't really "isms", but it just goes to show how perceptive Addison is.

Addison and Dustin were giving Chase a bath. Chase spit up on Dustin's shirt. Addison, unprompted, went into our bedroom, pulled open Dustin's t-shirt drawer and brought him a clean shirt. I have no idea how she knew his shirts were in that drawer and think it's pretty amazing that she thought to do that in the first place!

My mother-in-law was in Chase's room opening a new box of diapers. Addison came back with a pair of (sharp) scissors that she retrieved from one of my bathroom vanity drawers. She knew those scissors were there. They have since been moved to a high shelf in our linen closet!

My sweet, sweet, SWEET Addie

As I mentioned in my previous post, I had a slight emotional breakdown last Friday on our trip to Cincinnati. First of all, this isn't a common occurrence, or ever an occurrence, really. Therefore, Addison has never seen me cry or even lose my cool. I guess I was bound to fall apart one of these days!

Chalk it up to hormones, sleep deprivation, driving 10 mph in a 65 mph zone in a snow storm with 2 young children, or maybe all of those things combined. Whatever it was and as hard as I tried, I just couldn't hold it in this time. Lucky for me, I have the sweetest, most compassionate child ever imaginable. She makes everything better no matter how bad it is!

When I first started crying, while Dustin was strapping down the mattresses, I had my head resting in my hand, hoping Addison wouldn't notice.
A: Mommy, you okay?
M: Yes, honey, Mommy is okay.
A: Mommy, your hair hurt?
M: Yeah, baby, my hair hurts.
A: Mommy, don't cry. Your hair beautiful.
M: Aww, thanks baby. You're so sweet.
A: Mommy, it's okay. Please don't cry. I love you, Mommy.

(This continued for close to 1/2 hour)

Second breakdown was on the road a while later. The conversation went something like this (continuing until I collected myself):

A: Mommy, you crying?
M: No, sweetie, I'm not crying (lie).
A: Don't cry Mommy. Your hair beautiful.
M: Thank you, baby.
A: Mommy, your eyes beautiful.
M: Thank you, Addison.
A: Mommy, I give you big hug right now (stretches her arms out towards me). I hold you when we get there, Mommy.
M: Okay, sweetie. I would like that.
A: You all better now, Mommy?
M: Yes, I am all better now. Thanks, baby.

Addieisms

When watching me change Chase's diaper, Addison proclaimed "Look, Avocados on Chase's bottom!" We are almost positive she was referring to his little marbles (which at the time was still pretty swollen, making it look like one marble or in Addison's opinion, an Avocado). Perhaps the seed of an Avocado?

-------------------------------------------------------

Later that day, she picked up her new baby, Violet and said "She hungry. Come on baby. Eat off Addison's breast (as she pulled up her shirt).

-------------------------------------------------------

Addison is coming down with a cold and was complaining about her left ear hurting during her bath. Just to make sure she wasn't bluffing, I would touch her right ear and ask her "Is this the one that hurts?" She would respond in a very annoyed tone "NO - this one!" (touching her left ear). I did this several times - same result. So, I assured her we would go to the doctor tomorrow. We were just there yesterday for Chase. Ugh. As I was putting her to bed, I told her that if she didn't feel good during the night, she could say "Mommy, Daddy, I don't feel good." and we'd come to her. She then said "Mommy, I don't feel good NOW." What a smarty!

Quote of the day

After reading Addison's sign language book and asking her if she will help me teach sign to her little brother:

"Yes! Open Mommy's belly?"

Addieisms

My mom and I were talking last night about all the cute things that Addison says. My mom said that, for her, one of the best parts of being a mother was listening to her children and the things they had to say. We talked about how pictures were so wonderful to look back on (for instance, I am amazed when I look at pictures from over the summer and realize that Addison hasn't always looked like she looks right now!) and how we wished there was a way to remember everything our children said.

Then today I was catching up on some friend's blogs and my friend, Kate, had documented some adorably hilarious things her daughter had said recently.

So with that, I have decided to start documenting some (a very small sample, I'm sure) of the cute things that Addison says. As her vocabulary and language continue to develop, I'm sure there are going to be many, many things I will want to remember. So, this is the first post of "Addieisms"!

----------------------------------------------------------

In bed for the night (holding her baby in her arms) after a trip to Urgent Care:

A: You okay, baby?
Baby: no response
A: It's okay, baby.
A: It's okay, baby.
A: Shhh, it's okay, baby.

She then falls asleep

----------------------------------------------------------
Addison comes in my room while I am on bed rest and hops in bed with me:

A: Wake up, Mommy. My help you.
Me: Oh honey, Mommy has to keep resting.
A: Mommy, my help you up.
Me: Okay, sweetie
A (lifting my arm and making sounds like it weighs 500 pounds): OOOOOOOOH, dere you go Mommy.
(I sit up)
A: Good job, Mommy.
Me: Thank you, sweetie.

---------------------------------------------------------
Eats 9/10ths of something and says

A: No like, Mommy. It's lucky (yucky).

---------------------------------------------------------
Last night during bedtime prayer:

A: Dear Jesus, Thank you for blessing families, friends. You go, Mommy.
Me: Dear Lord, Thank you for blessing our families and friends and the food that we eat. Please bless all the babies in the world, including baby Chase. Thank you for keeping us healthy and happy and please watch over us tonight as we sleep. Amen. Your turn, Addison.
A: Deeeeeeeear Jesus. Deeeeeeeeear Lord. Deeeeeeeeear Santa. Amen. Mommy turn.
